The consensus position

Mainstream Semitists treat ትጉሃን as the Geez masculine sound plural of ትጉህ "watchful, diligent", from the native Ethiopic verb ተግሀ "to be awake", root t-g-h, with solid cognates only inside Ethiopian Semitic and the angelic "Watchers" sense a fourth to sixth century calque on Greek egrēgoroi. No relationship to Bantu is proposed or entertained.
