Mainstream comparative linguistics derives ἀποκτείνω from ἀπό "away, off" plus κτείνω "slay", the latter from Proto-Hellenic *kten- and a contested Proto-Indo-European root written *tken- or *dhgʷhen- "strike down, kill", compared with Sanskrit kṣaṇoti and possibly Greek φθίνω. No relationship to Shona or any Bantu language is posited.
