Mainstream comparative linguistics derives Pelagia from Greek Πελαγία, feminine of πελάγιος "of the open sea", from πέλαγος "open sea", conventionally traced to PIE *pelh2- "flat, spread out", though Beekes flags πέλαγος as possibly Pre-Greek substrate. No connection to Shona or any Bantu language is recognised.
