Mainstream comparative Semitics derives Eden from Hebrew ʿēḏen, tied to a root ʿ-d-n meaning luxury, abundance or lushness, a reading strengthened by the ninth-century BCE Tell Fekherye bilingual where Aramaic mʿdn glosses Akkadian "who makes plentiful". An older and now weaker proposal takes the name from Sumerian eden "plain, steppe" by way of Akkadian edinnu.
