Mainstream comparative linguistics holds that Zakhar is a Russian vernacular shortening of Zakhariya, from Greek Zacharias, from Hebrew Zəḵaryāhū "Yahweh has remembered", built on the Semitic root z-k-r "remember, mention", with Arabic ḏakara, Akkadian zakāru and Geʿez zakara as cognates. No relationship to Bantu languages is recognised.
