Mainstream comparative linguistics treats Ancient Greek θεός as a word of disputed Indo-European origin, most commonly derived from a suffixed stem *dhh1s-os of PIE *dheh1- "to put, set" (compare Latin fēstus, fēriae, fānum, Oscan fasnu-), with alternative proposals including *dhwes- "to breathe" and possible pre-Greek substrate influence; it is held to be unrelated to Latin deus, Sanskrit devá and Ζεύς, which descend from *dyew-.
