Mainstream comparative Semitics derives Hebrew qānāh from a Proto-Semitic root *q-n-y "to acquire, get", with cognates in Ugaritic, Phoenician, Aramaic, Arabic, Sabaic and Ge'ez, and treats the homonymous noun qāneh "reed" as a probably separate item, possibly a Sumerian-origin Wanderwort. No relationship to Bantu is recognised, and the place name Qanah is normally taken as "place of reeds".
